WORKING METHOD

After the opening conversation the number of sessions depends on your question or problem and more importantly on the (right) effort you put in. Sessions usually consist of dialogues but if necessary also of effective result oriented methods which have in common that they get to the nitty-gritty quickly, to what really matters. After gaining insight to change the things you want action plans can be put into action under guidance.

 Opening conversation
The opening conversation without obligations lasts a maximum of 45 minutes in which we look at your question or problem and see if and what I can do for you. We also talk about the possibilities and impossibilities of life coaching or counselling with regards to your specific situation.  Each other expectations and the conditions of being coached or counselled are also part of the initial conversation.

Apart from that the initial conversation is being used to see if I can do something for you, it is also meant to see if we can have a good working relationship. In other words do we get on? After all this is essential for succeeding.

The sessions
Sessions usually consist of dialogues in which if need be any re-occurring things such as certain behaviour patterns, constricting convictions, themes, etc. are pointed out to you. Depending on your needs and which approach is most suitable to you and most effective, certain tools and (interactive) methods are used, of course in agreement by you. Methods such as analytic drawing (no skill and experience needed), (family) constellation using objects, writing down your personal- and family history (behaviour patterns), etc.

The advantage of virtually all these methods is that they are quick, effective and can get to the nitty-gritty quickly, to that what matters. Results are achieved in a short time span that by usual dialogue would not have or with great difficulty. Most of the time a drawing session can save you another two normal sessions and literally show you (and me) a lot of things in just a few minutes. Of course the methods are only used with your consent. Most of sessions however will consist of dialogues.

Gaining insight is just the beginning not the end
Surprisingly a lot of life coaches, counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists and the likes are under the impression that when you have gained insight into the cause of your problem, the problem will sort itself out automatically. If you ask me, gaining insight is just the beginning and most of the time the easy part. While it is definitely useful to know ‘what’ the cause of your problem is (the link to the current problem), it is even more important to know ‘how’ you can get rid of it or at least deal with it better. Gaining insight will make you feel relieved (it is not you, it is caused by someone or something in your past) but getting rid of the problem will have an ever lasting positive effect on your life. And after all isn’t that what you really want…

Number of sessions
Usually six to twelve and on occasion just a few sessions are enough to get things moving and going in the right direction. The number of sessions depends on your question or problem but more importantly on the (right) effort you put in. In other words the more honest you can be to yourself and the more active you are with regards to your situation or problem, the more quickly the change process will go. My part in all of this among other things is to guide and support you in gaining insight(s), getting and staying active towards your problem. However in the end it is you who has to put thoughts, insights etc. into action.
