COUNSELLING

Counselling is a form of short term professional psychological guidance. It is meant for mentally healthy people who would like to handle certain situations and/or problems better. Counselling focuses on gaining insight, accepting and coming to terms with certain situations and/or problems.

What is counselling?
Counselling is a form of professional psychological guidance. This kind of guidance a person might need if there are certain kinds of problems and/or (physical) complaints. What kind of problems or complaints differs from person to person. Counselling can be a form of short term professional psychological guidance for one person and a form of short term practical assistance for another. On what subject and in what way counselling takes place depends on the client’s particular need.

For who is counselling meant?
Counselling is meant for mentally healthy people who could use a bit of help to handle certain situations and/or problems better. There are many situations and problems in which counselling could be useful. Unfortunately every person has to deal with certain difficulties and painful things in their lives. This is part of life and is often unavoidable. However how you deal with it is up to you.

Situations in which a counsellor could be useful

  • If you don’t feel good about yourself (in certain areas).
  • Wanting to handle certain things and/or deal with certain people better
  • Encountering the same kind of problems in (work) relations
  • Encountering the same kind of situations/ problems over and over in your life
  • Not being able to deal with things by yourself
  • Not being able to put certain things to rest

The list is endless.

What does a counsellor do?
A counsellor is someone who asks (further questions), listens attentively, brings structure to the conversation and your story, who points out certain things, challenges you and confronts you if needed. However a counsellor is also someone who understands and supports you, who doesn’t judge you, etc. Because the counsellor is an outsider and looks at a situation objectively (s)he can help you to see things more in perspective. (S)he can help you to look at things differently and/or to handle things better by giving insight in your own situation more objectively and have you accept things the way they are. You can not undue the past but you can look at it differently and therefore experience it differently.

Physical complaints
Body and mind go together. If you have certain (vague) physical complaints for which there is no direct medical explanation, it might be useful to look for the real cause of the complaint through counselling. Often a physical complaint is a sign that there is something (else) wrong. By looking closely at the cause of the complaint it is often possible to take care of the physical complaint and visa versa.

You are the best investment
Counselling can be ‘the’ solution to certain small and big problems. This sounds easy but often it is not. It can be quite demanding to you as you have to be prepared to look at yourself in all honesty and you will have to have the courage and the stamina to really change. The result will be absolutely worth it and will be the best investment (in yourself) you  will ever make.

Life coaching is unsuitable for people with psychological problems and if suspected that this might be the case the person will be referred a psychologist or psychiatrist.
